The Handara Gate — formally the entrance gateway to the colonial-era Handara Golf & Resort in Pancasari village, Buleleng — has become one of Bali's most instantly recognisable images. The towering paduraksa-style split gate of black volcanic stone rises against the misty highland sky, perfectly framing the forested slopes of Mount Batukaru on clear mornings. Situated at approximately 1,100 metres above sea level near Lake Bratan in the central highlands, the gate benefits from cool mountain air and frequent morning mist that rolls in from the surrounding caldera. Early arrivals before 7 a.m. catch the best light and the mist at its most dramatic — and avoid the midday queues. The surrounding Pancasari plateau is one of Bali's most scenic highland zones: coffee and clove plantations, strawberry farms, quiet lakeside villages, and towering bamboo groves all lie within a short drive. Pair a visit to the gate with sunrise at nearby Lake Tamblingan or a walk through the Bedugul Botanical Gardens.
