Pagerwesi literally means "iron fence" (pager = fence, wesi = iron), and the ceremony is understood as a strengthening of the barriers that protect the self, the family, the village, and the cosmos against negative energies and the forces of adharma. Falling four days after Galungan (on Buda Kliwon Sinta), Pagerwesi is a day of meditation, fasting, and intense ceremony for Balinese Hindus, particularly Brahmins and those in priestly roles. The day is dedicated to Sanghyang Pramesti Guru, the supreme divine teacher, and seeks spiritual clarity and moral fortitude. While less visually spectacular to outside observers than Galungan or Nyepi, Pagerwesi is considered one of the most spiritually significant days in the Balinese calendar. In some villages, particularly in the Buleleng and Tabanan regions, Pagerwesi is marked with large communal gatherings, traditional music, and offerings.
