The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) was founded in 2003 in the aftermath of the 2002 Bali bombings, with the explicit aim of rebuilding cultural tourism to the island through an event that celebrated the power of literature, storytelling, and dialogue. In the two decades since, it has grown into Asia's most important literary gathering — five intensive days in October that transform Ubud's royal palaces, courtyards, and rice-paddy pavilions into a global conversation about books, culture, and ideas. More than 200 authors from 40+ countries participate each year, including Nobel laureates, Booker Prize winners, and groundbreaking voices from across Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East alongside established literary celebrities. The programme spans author readings, panel discussions, film screenings, cooking demonstrations (with an emphasis on Balinese culinary traditions), and late-night events that spill across Ubud's restaurant district long after the official programme ends. The festival's emphasis on Indonesian and Southeast Asian writing gives it a character and perspective entirely distinct from Western literary festivals. Indonesian novelists, Balinese oral poetry practitioners, and writers from Timor-Leste and Papua sit on panels alongside internationally famous names — a combination that consistently produces unexpected and illuminating conversations. Most events are held in venues of genuine historical and cultural significance: the main stage in the Ubud Royal Palace, side events in ancestral family compounds and rooftop galleries.
