Pura Lempuyang Luhur is the highest of a complex of seven temples on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang (1,058 m) in east Bali's Karangasem regency. The world-famous image of Mount Agung's perfect volcanic cone reflected in a mirror pool beneath the temple's ornate split gate has become synonymous with Bali itself. The pilgrimage route ascends approximately 1,700 steps through forest and smaller temple gates — a journey that takes two to three hours each way and carries deep spiritual significance. Each of the seven temples along the route represents a different aspect of Balinese Hindu cosmology. The uppermost temple, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, is one of the island's six directional temples (Sad Kahyangan), believed to protect Bali from evil spirits entering from the east. Visitors wear a ceremonial sarong and sash (provided at the entrance). The signature photo at the split gate is taken from a platform below using a mirror or puddle to create the reflection effect — arrive by 7 a.m. to find manageable queues.
