Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is a 8-square-kilometre island that sits midway between mainland Bali and Nusa Penida, connected to the smaller Nusa Ceningan by a yellow pedestrian suspension bridge that has become one of the most photographed structures in the Nusa islands. The island offers everything Nusa Penida offers — clear water, excellent diving, dramatic coastal scenery — in a more human-scale setting with better infrastructure and a long-established tourism economy that predates Penida's recent surge. The island's beaches divide into distinct characters: Mushroom Bay on the southwest is calm, sheltered, and lined with guesthouses and restaurants — excellent for swimming and snorkelling from the beach. Sandy Bay on the west coast faces open water and gets enough swell for intermediate surfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Dream Beach and Sunset Beach on the southern and western cliffs offer dramatic scenery but limited swimming due to currents. The underwater landscape is Lembongan's greatest asset. The channel between Lembongan and Ceningan — "Crystal Channel" — is one of Indonesia's finest drift dives: a fast, deep current carrying nutrients that support huge schools of barracuda, trevally, and batfish, with regular encounters with manta rays from July to October. The island's southern wall dives drop to 40 metres and are covered in gorgonian sea fans and black coral. Numerous dive operators on the island offer everything from open-water courses to technical diving.
